Partial Meniscus tear? Surgery or not?

Is the meniscus tear flap simple or complex/ displaced or not. If displaced & in pain unable to do day-to-day activities, maybe surgery is the only option. If non-displaced, wait?

Are you able to get through most of your day? Consider waiting. Do PT & wait. There is some research saying that menisectimy vs PT was the same in 3 months or so.

Blood supply is low. It can take a long time to heal, depending on the where the tear is. For a friend, healed in 2 years.

Arthroscopy (minimally invasive surgery through a hole) can remove the tear & is a basic surgery for orthpedic surgeons. 2 weeks in crutches. Then, rehab with physical therapy can take months. For some, the recovery is very good. For others, there are good & bad days post surgery.

Long-term risks of knee issues like osteoarthritis have increased once the injury happened. If the meniscus doesn't heal, risk increases. Risk increases if part of the meniscus is removed. Risks either way.

Things to consider:

  • Physiotherapy for surrounding muscles.
  • Consider hinged braces.
  • Consider pilates for daily exercises & exercises for other parts of the body.
  • Walk with hiking poles.
  • Reduce weight, which reduces day to day stress on the knee. Increase intake of veggies, fruits, healthy whole grains.
  • Vegan protein powder mixed with unsweetened aloe-vera. Aloe-vera is an ancient Ayurvedic medicine for joints.
  • Consider regular cold packs to increase blood supply.
  • Coconut oil massage of the knee. Coconut oil is used in Ayurveda for the joints.
